How is Son doing today?
Son lives with a loving Children’s Bridge family in Halifax, and travels frequently to Boston for his treatments. Air Canada’s Kids’ Horizons program generously supports Son’s travel between Halifax and Boston. The IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax provides Son with any urgent or general pediatric care needed while he is in Halifax, and the doctors there donate their time to Son.
Son has already received several treatments in Boston, and he will soon be having one of many surgeries. It has been a difficult time for him, beginning with a tracheostomy to make sure his air passages stay open during treatment. He is often in considerable pain. But Son is a very determined boy, and he has made it clear he wants to do whatever it takes.
When Son is not receiving or recovering from treatment, he is an active and lively student in Grade 5 in Halifax. He is learning English, as well as improving in his Vietnamese language skills. His ESL teacher says he is very bright. He loves to play sports, chess and computer games. He takes part in many school and extracurricular activities, and he gets along well with the two young daughters of his Children’s Bridge foster family. This summer he was able to spend “hanging out” time with the family at their summer cottage before going back to Boston for more treatment.
Son sometimes is homesick for his friends and caregivers in Hai Duong, so he now calls Vietnam regularly to stay in touch. The Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada recently visited Son in Halifax, and Son has also visited with Lauren Harper, wife of Prime Minister Steven Harper. David Wilkins, the American ambassador to Canada, also has taken an interest in Son, and recently hosted a reception in support of the Foundation’s Embrace-an-Orphanage campaign, which benefited Son’s home in Hai Duong.
