Ethiopia: Safe haven in a country of orphans,
There are three-quarters of a million children orphaned by AIDS in Ethiopia. Without parents or extended family, these children face a grim future. Many live on the streets. Some will die there.
Children under five make up only 13% of the population, but more than half of the deaths in Ethiopia. Adama town has one of the highest numbers of AIDS orphans in the country, with an estimated 5,000 children without parents. Many of these children will die of malnutrition.
The Children’s Bridge Foundation is helping centres in Adama town and Nazareth to provide care for hundreds of children in this desperate situation. Nutrition is the most critical need, with education and medical care close behind. The centres want to establish a breakfast and lunch program, combined with schooling, so the children have enough to eat so they survive to learn.
The need at these centres is critical. They need everything from nutrition programs, sanitation supplies, cribs, clothing, medical equipment, toys and educational support to improvements to the basic facilities.
