Hai Duong: Special needs, a special boy

The Hai Duong orphanage in Vietnam cares for over 700 orphaned and abandoned children. Most are school-aged with special medical needs. Many use sign language to communicate. Hai Duong’s mission is to provide care, education, job training and opportunity for these special children

The children’s rooms have five metal bunk beds with boards and bamboo mats for mattresses. More than one child may share a bed; some sleep on the floor. The pond in the centre of the orphanage was once a bomb crater, and the play yard has a metal swing and little else. Hai Duong needs help with everything from soap and towels to breakfast programs, medical equipment and trade education tools.

Hai Duong was home to a very special little boy, 11-year-old Son Pham(link to Son Pham section of website). A huge tumour on the left side of his face almost obscured his nose and mouth. With the generous help of thousands of Canadians, the Children’s Bridge Foundation brought Son to Canada for medical evaluation. He is now receiving life-saving treatment in the United States with the support of the Foundation and people like you.
